When I was in Junior High School I spent time in the Children's Hospital here in Calgary, blind with an eye injury. It was terrifying, but I always had the support of my generous roommate, Billy, who was the same age as me and would help direct me to the washroom and such. Hearing the sound of his coughing and physio, this was my first education with Cystic Fibrosis. I was able to fully recover, but unfortunately, Billy would pass on while I was in High School. That same year of Billy's death, my cousin gave birth to her first son Richard, who is now attending his first year of High School while doing a great job battling his own struggles with Cystic Fibrosis with amazing strength and determination. Last year, I got in touch with Wendi, the sister of Billy, and was able to see photographs for the first time of the young man (Billy) who inspired me to become involved in Cystic Fibrosis fund-raising, and it was so touching that I couldn't help but tear up, yet get stronger. I have been a volunteer with the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since 2007, and will be for life. I am riding my scooter in the Ride For the Breath of Life from Airdrie to Drumheller on September 18, 2010 for the first time.
