Knitting the Camino

Knitting the Camino is a journey for memory. Nigel Pottle has been inspired to walk the Camino de Santiago because of his memories of his first journey across Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in 2004. Pilgrims have traveled this route, a distance of 800 kilometers, for more than a thousand years. For Nigel, knitting is a connection with memory. It is a skill that has been handed down through generations. Nigel’s mother learned to knit from her mother, and passed her knowledge and love of the craft to him. So too, the Camino is a path of memory that has stretched across Spain and through time, inspiring countless thousands of people who accepted the challenge of walking the route. Nigel says, “Alzheimer’s disease has had an impact on me and my family, and I want to support those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of those living with the disease and the lives of their families. By walking the Camino and taking my knitting with me, I feel I am walking in the footsteps of my family and on the path of history.” Knitting socks as he walks is for him a connection to the many feet that have trod the path. If by making this journey, he is able to inspire others to support the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, the journey will be worth every step and every stitch of the way. Follow Nigel’s journey at www.knittingthecamino.wordpress.com. Here you will find his story of the preparation he has made for the journey and the progress he makes as he follows the path.
