Racing to Save Lives!

Welcome to my Team In Training home page. I am training to participate in the San Diego Half Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada's Team In Training.

I’d like to share with you a little bit about why I am embarking on this adventure. From as far back as I can remember when anyone would ask me ‘Where’s your mom?’ it was natural to answer ‘I don’t have one. She passed away when I was one.’ In my life that was normal, it was just the way it was. Of course every now and then I wondered what it would have been like to have a mom, and occassionally I felt truly sad when I thought about what my mom, dad and family must have gone through in those days. But to actually put myself in that place was very difficult.

It really hit me last February when my daughter was about a year and a half. You see, my daughter was born in October, as was I. She was the same age and it was the same time of year that my mother was realizing for certain that she was going to have to leave. Looking at my daughter and thinking of all the joy she brings to my life, my heart was breaking. To even imagine for a moment having to leave this world and not watch her grow up, not feel her hugs and kisses, to not hear her laughter tore me to pieces. It was then that I truly understood the pain, anger, helplessness and utter sadness that my mom had to endure.

I am so grateful that I have been blessed with my health to not only to be there for my daughter and family, but also to train and fundraise with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training to help stop leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.

I'm completing this event in memory of my mother, Colleen Kirby and in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
