My Message
|
When I tell people about my "ambitious" endeavour, the first question I get is, "What made you sign up for a triathlon?!" Initially, I would say, "Because I've always wanted to do something big for a cause greater than myself." But the real story started decades ago before I even started school. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. I made a promise that if I became a doctor I would help find a cure for cancer, Leukemia in particular, as it was the only form of cancer I knew of as a child. All through my childhood, I set my mind on becoming a doctor. At the age of 18, I passed the medical school entrance examination and I was ready to start my medical-proper. But that same year I got very ill. I was diagnosed with Lupus. My doctor advised that I consider taking up another course of studies, saying I would not survive the stress of medical school. At 18, I had tons of do's and don’ts. I felt that my medication was too much for me. It was both physically and financially debilitating, until one day, I decided to fight my illness head-on. I stopped taking my medication. I became more active despite the doctor's advice to avoid sunlight and late nights. I joined the school's volleyball team. I swam in the ocean under the scorching sun. I challenged myself. I just couldn't let any illness stop me from living my life. Miraculously, my illness disappeared, leaving no trace whatsoever of the disease. But I was left thinking I would never get the chance to fulfill my life's dream of helping find a cure for cancer. I thought, "Oh well, maybe not in this lifetime." Then in 2007, just after I arrived in Canada, I came across a Team In Training flyer at one of the elementary schools I was volunteering in. My long forgotten dream was revived!
I am not a professional swimmer, but I will be swimming 400 meters in the open ocean. I've never owned a bike in my life (I did have a trike when I was 4), but I will be cycling 20km with the pros. I could run really fast but for only short distances, but I will be running 5 km in Honolulu. And I will be doing all three events in one race! I've never been an athlete, but now I am training to become a tri-athlete. I didn't become a doctor, but I am fulfilling my dream! And through my family and friends' support, I am moving closer and closer towards the fulfillment of this dream.
On behalf of our honourees, the cancer patients and cancer survivors, I thank you.
I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
