My Message
When Alzheimer’s became part of our family with Dad’s diagnosis in 2006, we could not imagine what the future would hold for him, or for our family. For several years his condition remained relatively stable from an outsider’s perspective, however, it was difficult to watch his personal frustration and disappointment in losing the ability to do simple tasks like tie his shoes or remember his address. In his attempts to gain some sense of control, he got lost a number of times, but eventually returned home safely, guided by caring community members. My parents sheltered the impact of this disease on their lives for many years; living with a fear of embarrassment associated with the stigma of a seemingly ‘invisible’ condition.
In spring 2012, at 80 years of age, Dad, an avid lover of the outdoors, skied for the last time due to a ski accident related to his declining memory. In summer 2013, he was still able to ride an adapted bike. Today, now in the advanced stages, he needs assistance with all aspects of daily care, support to sit/stand and walk a few steps, and uses a wheelchair. It is difficult to understand his speech and he often needs encouragement to eat. We still catch glimpses of his quick wit and sense of humour but these moments have become fewer and further between, and we are not always sure he remembers who we are. He continues to live at home and partake in daily family life, largely due to Mom’s sheer tenacity, determination, advocacy, and community support. But every day is a different challenge with the uncertainty of mood swings and changing physical abilities.
Mom has been “hinting” for the past few years that she and I participate in the Ascent for Alzheimer’s together – before she turns 70. She will have just turned 69 years of age when we venture to trek up Kilimanjaro in 2015. Having watched Dad progress through the various stages of this degenerative disease that slowly deprives a person of their ability to care, think and act for themselves, and felt the impact on his caregivers, has encouraged us to take a proactive stance in raising awareness of and support for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. We recognize there are many worthy and needy charities in our communities, and we appreciate your consideration in supporting our endeavour.
100 per cent of all funds we raise go directly to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to support education, support services, advocacy and research in the fight against this disease. We look forward to sharing our journey with you.
