My Message
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I am training to participate in the Lavaman triathlon in Kona,Hawaii as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada’s Team In Training.

When the opportunity struck to do this event in Kona, I laughed. Out loud. I have been scared of swimming in the ocean since I was four years old and almost drowned, ironically in Hawaii. It was out of the question that I would willingly swim 1.5km out into open ocean. Then I started thinking about the cause that I would be raising funds for. Cancer has affected everyone I know in some way. Even my kids know someone fighting cancer right now. My fear of swimming in open water pales in comparison to the fear caused by this disease. Having a recent scare in my own family was horriffic. I can't imagine the fear if the diagnosis had been different. For so many that is a reality. We all know someone who has had to face that reality and overcome their fears in order to fight for survival. So what is a little swim?

While this particular cancer may not have affected you personally, I believe that research and development of new treatments in every cancer field carries over into all cancers. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLSC’s mission. Every 28 minutes someone in Canada is diagnosed with a blood cancer (Canadian Cancer Statistics). Our fundraising dollars have made a large impact in developing life changing cancer drugs, such as Gleevec.

I hope you’ll visit my facebook page at www.facebook.com/konachronicles. Be sure to check back often to see my progress.

Thanks for your support!

Update: When I signed up for this race, I didn't have a strong connection to leukemia or lymphoma. I was just hoping to raise funds to help with cancer research in general. A dear friend recently lost his father, who had leukemia. His nephew was unable to attend the funeral because he was in the hospital receiving treatment for his newly diagnosed lymphoma. Now I have a connection, and this just got personal!! I will carry this family with me during the race, wearing a special lightweight bracelet. Green to symbolize the lymphoma, orange for leukemia, and one link each of blue (swim), purple (bike), and silver (run).
